These are the most frequent piano playing questions that people ask:
How many keys has the piano?
The average piano has 88 keys, where 36 of them are black and the others are white keys. There are also pianos with 85 keys and pianos with more than 88 keys. Usually the additional keys are there for larger sound and better resonance.
Why does the piano have pedals?
The pianos usually have two pedals. The left one is the so called soft pedal, while the right one is the sustain pedal. The soft pedals enable the hammers to strike two out of three strings and the sound gets softer. The sustain pedal lifts the dampers and the notes are sustained until the pedal is released. Some pianos have a small pedal in the middle of these two and this small pedal can perform many different functions depending on the model of the piano.
Should I tune my piano?
The acoustic pianos should be tuned at least twice a year, yet many manufacturers recommend for a new piano to be tuned four times a year and then when it is no longer new – twice a year. Note that keeping the piano tuned is very important.
Should I clean the piano keys?
Yes, you should and you should do that with frequency depending on the usage. In case you play the piano often – then, you should clean it every week. If you play the piano very rare then you should clean it once in every 6 months.
I want to learn to play the piano – should I buy an acoustic one or a digital one?
There is a difference playing on an acoustic piano and on a digital keyboard. Your choice should depend on the space you have, the maintenance you can allow and the budget that you have. The truth is that you can learn well on both, thus better choose the one that better suits your style.
